Today
we drove the road to Hana. It’s a 43 mile drive with 600 turns. Not joking.
There are lots of stops along the way like waterfalls, scenic overlooks, black
sand beaches, and other adventures. Our first stop was at a scenic overlook
with a great view of the ocean and bay. There were wild chickens running around the stop. Kaumakina State Wayside Park. Next we went to Kiunai Peninsula. It was a bunch of jagged lava rocks (a'a) along the shore. It was cool to watch the waves crash on them.
We then went to Three Bears Falls, which Drew climbed down and swam in. We drove through lots of bends and forests before coming to another waterfall. It was techinically on private property, but Drew and mom went swimming anyways. It was a small fall, but still pretty.
After that we stopped to walk through the Hana lava tube. We were underground walking through dried up lava with flashlights. You could see the different types of flow along with what flows came when. There were stalagtites that looked like melted chocolate. Stalagmites are very rare in Maui. I only saw two. There was also dried lava that looked like dragon eggs.
We had lunch along the coast and then continued on down the road. We played around on the black sand beaches, saw more waterfalls and then stopped at the Seven Falls. Its 7 small waterfalls that eventually dump into the ocean. We went swimming in a couple of the pools. As we neared the end of the Road, the view turned rocky with some pasture land. Overall it was a pretty neat drive.
It was our last night, so we ended the trip as we started. After dinner, we took a sunset sailboat cruise. It wasn't as roudy or as fun as the first, but it was a nice way to end our time in Hawaii.
Until Next Time...
